    Join an academic department which produces internationally excellent and world leading research Enhance your research skills with opportunities to engage in events, conferences and training Learn in a large and diverse business school with the specialist resources, facilities and data sets to help you succeed You will be part of our vibrant doctoral community in one of 3 academic departments: Management, Finance, Accounting and Business Systems and Service Sector Management. We have extensive expertise in creating new knowledge and applying business research to solve of real world problems in management, finance, operations, hospitality, tourism, events, food and nutrition and language. How you learn Your supervisory team will include a Director of Studies and one or more second supervisors with expertise and interest in your research area. However, much of the work for your degree will be carried out independently, and you will need the initiative, motivation and commitment to succeed. Your supervisors will help you to define your research programme, agree any associated training requirements, and provide direction while encouraging you to develop as an independent researcher. You learn through Independent research Supervisory meetings Applied learning Networking opportunities You will be invited to participate in a wide range of Sheffield Business School research events including the opportunity to showcase your own research and receive constructive feedback. We also support research students to participate in external conferences hosted either here at the University or at other institutions thus enabling you to develop your network and be exposed to a wide range of different research disciplines and methodologies. You will be part of the University's community of researchers, with the opportunity to attend and/or contribute to a range of discipline, faculty and University-wide presentations, training and conferences. We recognise that MPhil researchers arrive with a diversity of skills and experience. Therefore, we provide flexible training and development opportunities covering a range of research-related skills. Indicative areas include transferable skills, research ethics and integrity (mandatory), data management, teaching skills and career planning. Your development needs are identified and agreed with your supervisory team at the start of your degree, and reviewed and updated as appropriate. There is also a range of opportunities to engage in writing retreats, research training and other supportive interactions to enhance your research skills.

    Entry requirements

    Normally a good undergraduate degree and/or relevant postgraduate degree (with a dissertation mark of 60 per cent or higher). Some work experience related to the research question you wish to explore would be an advantage. You may also be able to claim credit points which can reduce the amount of time it takes to complete your qualification at Sheffield Hallam. Find out more If your first language is not English you must produce evidence of competence in English such as an IELTS score of 7.0 with 6.5 in all skills. TOEFL test with an overall score of 100 internet based, with a minimum component score of 23 in listening, 23 in reading, 26 in writing and 22 in speaking. We only accept direct applications, we do not accept applications submitted by agents.

    About this university

    International students

    The first spot to call at the university is the International Experience Team. This is a dedicated team who offer international students help and advice during their time in Sheffield. Their services start before a student arrives in the country with journey planning and arranging accommodation. There is also help in the form of a pre-arrival guide so students arrive knowing what to expect. There is also plenty of support on offer after this for matters such as immigration and visas, financial support and bringing families to the UK while studying. The Sheffield Hallam Students Union is based in the HUBS building and has a number of facilities available. These include an advice centre, the student union shop, Bar Phoenix, activities areas as well as skills and training opportunities and areas for the clubs and societies on offer. In addition, there is a student wellbeing department to help support students during their studies and careers advice to help prepare for a time after university. There are some 40 sports and 50 other clubs and groups established on the campuses as well as host of volunteering and charity work opportunities. Sports range from archery to badminton, cricket to cycling as well as football, rugby and swimming, to name a few. The societies fall into different categories such as active, appreciation, course and vocational, cultural, faith and belief, performance and political. As well as the student union other services on offer including multi-faith chaplaincy services, a business start-up service to help graduates, IT services and even help with finding part time employment between classes.
