About this university
Students travelling from outside the UK can start the process with the university’s website, which provides specific information by country for application as well as about visas and immigration. There is also the International Support team, on hand to help students adjust to their new home. There are English language programs for those seeking to learn or better their skills in the language as well as a first week course that helps them come to terms with their new home. This covers daily matters such as finding a doctor, a bank account and even getting part time work between studies if required. The Student Union is at the heart of activities outside the classroom at the university as well as providing support, advice and representation for its members. It is also responsible for the organisation of the various sports clubs and societies to occupy students outside the classroom. The union runs a Student Advice Centre on the campus offering free and confidential advice to students as well as a shop and other services. It operates a licensed bar as well as catering outlets in the residence halls and the annual social events including the Graduation Ball and Summer Festival. Student run media is also based in the building including a radio and TV station, all under the umbrella of Sonar Media. The clubs and societies cover all interests from sports to student media, volunteering and interest societies. The student yachting team at the university is of note, being previous world champions in their sport. Additionally, the university is one of the few to allow students to offer the Duke of Edinburgh award alongside their studies.
