University of Central Lancashire has opted into the TEF and received a Silver award.
Taught by those with academic and professional experience in the subject, this course will develop the student's ability to understand the criminal justice system, at both theoretical and operational levels, from UK and international perspectives. The core module applies social science to explain why crime concentrates in specific places at particular times. Then by analysing social, economic and political influences (including youth, race, gender and media), it explores how different societies attempt to control crime and offenders. This leads the student into examining the constituent parts of the CJS process, exploring the challenges surrounding risk assessment, diversion, sentencing, policing and prisons.

Entry requirements
To embark upon Doctoral study students are expected to show previous aptitude for research. This is most often illustrated by the previous award of a good degree (2:1 or above). However it is acknowledged that some students will not be in possession of such a qualification and the interview will explore their potential to successfully complete the programme. They need to demonstrate they are or have been active in professional practice in the area of criminal justice. Students with an undergraduate degree will commence at Stage 1 of the Professional Doctorate programme. Holders of a relevant Master's degree (Pass) may enter directly at Stage Two of the Professional Doctorate programme, subject to an interview. If you do not possess a relevant Master's degree but want to progress to the Professional Doctorate programme at Stage 2, UCLan and other universities provide a considerable choice on relevant Master's degrees. Please speak to the course leader for further information. Applicants will be required to have a minimum level of proficiency in English Language equivalent to IELTS grade 6.5 with no sub score lower than 6.0. ALL applicants will be interviewed prior to acceptance on the course and if appropriate an AP(E)L application will be considered. Two references will be required.

About this university
International students
There are an average of 2,000 international students attending the university from over 100 countries, often due to the range of international partnerships in place. There is a dedicated International Office that are available to help with matters such as the application process, visas and immigration advice and even help with coming to live in the city. There are a number of special international events held during the year to help students feel at home and learn about the larger community as well as with ties to their own cultures. The Student Union is the heart of activities outside the classroom as well as offer advice and representation for its members. It operates a two floor bar that has a number of well known music acts having performed there as well as another bar next door that is open every day during term time. There are some 35 different sports clubs on offer for students with many using the sports centre on campus. They take part in the BUCS leagues and also use the UCLan Sports Arena two miles from campus. There are also motor racing societies that run a team called UCLAN Racing. Student run media includes a newspaper called Pluto and there are numerous societies such as arts, interest and culture and faith based.
