The University of Dundee evaluation:

Architecture evaluation:

Description

The part 2 qualification, accredited by ARB/RIBA, constitutes the final two years of the MArch course. We welcome direct applications from students who hold part 1 (or equivalent) qualifications in Architecture.

The course asks you to build on the skills and knowledge gained in part 1, and develop your ideas and individual position through engagement with specialist input and complex architectural design/thesis projects.

At this level you will be given the maximum opportunities to choose a programme of study which suits your emerging interests as a maturing designer. We treat our wider context, the city and the landscape, as a live-lab asking students to engage with real places and real problems. You will focus on designing buildings and environments which respond to the needs of the individuals and society; architecture, spaces and places that are critically robust in terms of their cultural context, aspiration and intention.

At level 4, you will choose an integrated design project from a series of offered options, you also select design research themes which lead into final year unit studios. This gives you the opportunity to specialise in the aspects of architecture that most interest you and to develop individual thesis projects which explore these.

Level 5 studios allow for a variety of approaches to the discipline, from the polemic city plan to the design of autonomous, sustainanble dwellings for specific communities. Studios are centred on staff specialisms so you’ll be developing your own design research within the context of this expertise.

The cornerstone of our teaching is our vibrant studio culture. We are physcally located in Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design which means we benefit from both excellent facilities and a highly creative atmosphere. Design tutorials and the majority of learning takes place in the architecture studio where you’ll be encouraged to work in a hands-on way developing and testing your ideas through drawings, models and prototypes. You’ll work in small studio groups and on a one-to-one basis with experienced tutors, who are often also practicing architects, providing a supportive learning environment which fosters a spirit of independent enquiry and individual enterprise.

This course is accredited by Architects Registration Board (ARB) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)

About this university

International students

For students travelling from outside the UK, the International Advice Service is available to help them with all aspects of the transition. They offer confidential advice and help on matters such as immigration and visas, working during and after studies as well as community group information and links to international hospitality schemes. There is support for international families as well as arranging cultural and social events during the year aimed primarily at international students. They are based in the Enquiry Centre on Campus Green or via email. Students are represented by the University's Student Representative Council while the Students Association organises the societies, clubs and organisations outside the classroom. It is unusual because it isn't a member of the National Union of Students due to cost and political considerations. The union is based in Airlie Place, at the centre of the main campus and has a bar, nightclub and refectory on site. There are 42 clubs associated with the Sports Union at the university and these have annual award ceremonies as well as an annual Ball. A multi-million pound redevelopment saw a number of new facilities for sports around the university including the first UK gym with mp3/mp4 compatible personal viewing screens.
