About this university
International students
There are around 5,000 international students from over 120 countries attending the university each year and around 50% of postgraduates are from outside the UK. Their first point of contact is the International Office as well as the Student Union Advice Centre. Both of these are available for pre-arrival support including for areas such as finances, medical and immigration and visas advice. There is also a team available for professional counselling and advice on mental health issues who understand the stresses involved in living in a country not of your birth plus there is English language assistance available. The University of Essex Students Union is the heart of student life and operates a number of commercial services around the campus. Sub Zero has been voted best student venue in the UK and has seen notable acts including Pink Floyd, Blur and Radiohead perform there. Other facilities operated include a bar and club, shops including those stocking imported food for international students as well as the student union newspaper. The union also offers support and other services such as financial advice and assistance with medical and counselling matters. There are a large number of clubs and societies available outside the classroom with sport being particularly prominent. There are clubs for everything from football to American football and fencing, most known as the Essex Blades and compete in the BUSA Championships. There is also a Talent Development Centre that can help students find their ‘thing’ when they are unsure what it is they want to do with their time away from their studies. They also offer support services such as study and research skills.
