The University of Exeter evaluation:

The MA Applied Security Strategy (MStrat) is an interdisciplinary programme designed to develop confident, critical thinkers with the potential to lead on the development and execution of policy and strategy in an uncertain, culturally-diverse and resource-constrained world. The course content meets the needs of current and future strategic practitioners and anyone who wishes to understand strategy in action.

The programme employs simulations and field trips alongside lectures, seminars and conferences with leading academics and practitioners to create and train experts in the fusion of strategic communications and intelligence. The highly-relevant and practitioner-targeted programme will equip you with the skills to craft policy and strategy in the contemporary security arena.

  • Team taught by Strategy and Security Institute academics, led by Professor Patrick Porter, Lieutenant General (Retd) Sir Paul Newton KBE, and leading academics from across the University

  • Also learn from senior practitioners from the private sector, intelligence community, the military, NGOs, international organisations and across government

  • Innovative teaching includes crisis management simulations with practitioners and at NATO Allied Rapid Reaction Corps HQ

  • Field trips to the Balkans and Brussels to view strategic security issues at first hand

  • Exposure to Whitehall and participation in joint conferences with the Royal United Services Institute

  • Excellent networking and mentor and peer support

  • Full fee and other scholarships available for professional, academic, UK/EU and international students

About this university

International students

Students from some 140 countries come to Exeter each year to study and the International Student Support team are available to help them with matters such as immigration inquiries and visas issues as well as organising orientation programs and events taking place both on and off campus. They also run language classes for those who need to work on their English and produce newsletters filled with help and advice about living in the UK. They start with pre-arrival information to help students before they even arrive in Exeter. The Students Guild is the representative of the students at the university and organises the over 200 societies and clubs available to those attending Exeter. It is also responsible for arranging the annual Balls, though each residence hall also holds their own. These range from theatre companies to creative writing clubs, debate societies and volunteering projects. There is a student newspaper, TV station and a radio station. In sports, the Exeter University Athletic Union is responsible for the various sports clubs and organisations as well as sorting fixture lists. There are 49 clubs run through the university with around 5000 students taking part as well as another 3000 involved with intramural sports and sport volunteering programs. Most teams take art in the British Universities and Colleges Sport leagues.
