Interested in studying an MA in TESOL? We are now accepting applications for our MA in Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages.
The MA TESOL has been designed for practising language teachers who wish to further develop their existing career, or for those who wish to build a new career in teaching English as a foreign or second language. As well as contributing to professional development, it can enhance career prospects and pathways in public and private education, both in the UK and overseas. This programme provides opportunities for students to gain an in-depth understanding and application of current theories, research and practice in language learning and teaching. Students also pursue their own interests and/or professional needs in the preparation of their dissertation.
The Programme provides opportunities for students to achieve the following learning outcomes:
Advanced knowledge of differing theoretical approaches to contemporary theories of second language acquisition
Key methodologies and techniques in language teaching and learning
An understanding of contemporary issues in TESOL
Advanced understanding of the design of language tests and test evaluation
The construction of effective language teaching materials
Advanced knowledge of pedagogical English grammar
Advanced knowledge of English phonetics and phonology
An understanding of cross-linguistic variation and its relevance to language teaching
A theoretical perspective on the use of ICT in language learning and teaching
- The ability to carry out a sustained piece of independent research on a relevant topic.
An undergraduate degree at 2:1 or above in a relevant humanities or social sciences subject (or non-UK equivalent). Other areas may also be considered as suitable.

About this university
There is a thriving international community at the university including students from over 100 countries around the world. The International Office is the first point of contact for these students and can help with a variety of matters around living in the UK. This includes assistance with accommodation, registering for medical services and immigration and visas advice. They help with the arrival in London while students get used to their new home and with daily life matters as well as academic ones. There are also language courses on offer for those wishing to learn or improve their English skills. At the heart of student life at the university is the Students Union and all students are automatically members. It offers a range of services to these members including academic and non-academic advice and support, representation and the organisation of various clubs and societies for extracurricular times. It also operates three different bars as well as a shop and an online shop for students. The university has a top record for its sports teams and there are a range of competitive and non-competitive activities on offer. Clubs take part in the BUCS leagues against other universities and colleges and range from cricket and football to netball and self-defence activities. Likewise the societies over all aspects of life including academic, activities and games, campaigning, cultural and performing arts as well as the chance to start their own should students find a niche.
