The University of Liverpool evaluation:

Civil engineering and construction evaluation:

Description

University of Liverpool has opted into the TEF and received a Silver award.

OverviewWith the ever increasing environmental challenges, there is strong demand for civil and structural engineers who are practically-skilled in efficient design, green construction and sustainable development and who can play a central role in achieving sustainable adaptation to and mitigation of these challenges. The MSc Sustainable Civil and Structural Engineering programme provides a specialist, technical master's-level education in civil and structural engineering. The programme is designed to embed the knowledge, skills and understanding required to critically assess the function, use and impacts of concrete, steel and alternative construction materials in structural designs and to participate in the design, implementation and evaluation of engineering projects which are truly sustainable, bringing social, economic and environmental benefits to current future generations. The Sustainable Civil and Structural Engineering MSc provides an opportunity for you to develop advanced specialist knowledge in structural engineering, understand how to address the increasing challenges for the industry and develop your skills for the working environment. This MSc programme is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators, which represents the four major civil engineering institutions and accredits civil engineering programmes on behalf of the Engineering Council, which sets and maintains the standards for the engineering profession in the UK. This degree is accredited as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired a partial CEng accredited undergraduate first degree. See www.jbm.org.uk for further information. This 12-month programme consists of taught modules over two semesters and a major project starting in semester 2 and continuing through the summer. Assessment is by examinations, coursework and an individual dissertation. Places on the programme are limited to between 15 and 20.This programme can also be studied part-time over two years. The same modules are followed and the same total credits are achieved, but these are spread over four semesters at 30 credits per semester. The independent research project (module ENGG660) is chosen in the first year, but the completion deadline is not until the end of the second year, allowing flexibility in timing and distribution of effort over the full duration of the course.ProjectsProject work, based on a topic of industrial or scientific relevance, contributes 60 credits and is carried out in laboratories in the University or at an approved placement in industry. The project is examined by dissertation, and award of the MSc (Eng) degree will require evidence of in-depth understanding, mastery of research techniques, ability to analyse assembled data, and assessment of outcomes. For all applicants we expect normally at least a UK 2:1 (or equivalent) undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering only. Previous relevant industry experience is a strong advantage. All applications will be considered on individual merits. The course is taught in English and competency equivalent to IELTS 6.5 (no band lower than 6.0) is required (see full language requirements below).

About this university

International students

The International Support Team is on hand to help students travelling to Liverpool from outside the UK. They can help with matters such as visas and immigration advice, organising Welcome Week and its relevant details as well as presentations and workshops to help integrate with the new community. Further practical advice comes from living and working in the area as well as financial assistance and even improving English, if this isn’t a student’s first language. The Guild of Students is responsible for arranging the 190 clubs and societies available to students outside the classroom. These cover areas such as volunteering, the arts and sports. There are also plenty of opportunities to try something new and experiment with something different as well as practical, hands on societies to try a practical activity. Sports are very important at the university and many of its teams are in the higher tier of university sports. Sport Liverpool is the current heading of the sports clubs and groups and cover nearly 50 different types from cricket and football to windsurfing and lacrosse. Most compete for both men and women. There are also support services available to students as well as student health assistance and plenty of learning resources to assist with studies.
