Our History MA will offer you an exciting and challenging curriculum. It is led by our team of internationally recognised scholars, who combine research excellence with cutting edge teaching practice. The programme will offer you a distinctive and flexible opportunity to develop expertise in the areas of history which interest you. Our History MA will enable you to become independent, confident and digitally literate learners, thus improving your employability, by engaging in sophisticated analytical skills. You will be joining a programme with an established record of high levels of student satisfaction. Throughout the programme you will have the opportunity to emphasise your particular interests in social or political history through your choice of seminar and coursework assignments, and through the selection and development of an extended piece of independent research and critical writing on a topic of your choice. The acquisition of a Masters degree in History already demonstrates high levels of specialism, but you will gain this not only through the development of a range of transferable skills but with the inclusion of digital learning it will allow you to apply other key skills (such as creating digital portfolios, web development and data management). There will also be opportunities for you to contribute your own work to various forums, including our History programme seminar series.

Entry onto this Master’s degree requires a minimum of a 2:2 undergraduate honours degree. If your honours degree is not in History or a related discipline you will also be required to attend an interview.

About this university
The International Student Support team are on hand to help the students travelling from outside the UK on their arrival in York. Their services include a welcome and orientation program that includes different elements for levels of study and access to English language help for those to whom it isn't a native language. There are also regular drop-in sessions to help with matters such as finding work between classes, financial advice and help with immigration and visas. There is also a number of options to help students learn more about York and enjoy their time in the city including making use of local tourist attractions such as the Jorvik Viking Centre and the National Railway Museum. The Student Union is responsible for the representation of students at York St John as well as organising extracurricular activities. The union offer help and advice on a range of subject to its members including health and wellbeing matters, financial advice and even learning support. These services are based in the Holgate Student Centre. There is also a student union bar located in Phoenix Court offering a great place to meet friends and get hot and cold food and drinks. There are a number of sports clubs with considerable history behind them including the rowing club, founded in 1852 and the rugby club that was founded in 1883, also the biggest club on campus. The football club dates to 1883 and has featured a number of England international players while the cricket club is another of considerable age, dating from 1848. There are around 30 different societies on offer to students including performing arts such as drama and singing as well as interest and academic subjects such as psychology and primary education. All are in contention for the Society of the Year award awarded at the annual ball.
