Whether your objective is to develop as a filmmaker, documentarian, podcaster, radio producer or to run a YouTube channel, this course will help you develop your existing practice to further your career goals. Drawing on the University’s decades of expertise, strong industry links and location in York, Britain’s only UNESCO City of Media Arts, you will be ideally placed to shape your aspirations as a creative-thinking practitioner. Bridging theory and practice, this programme allows you to explore your ambitions to produce projects which have outstanding impact for audiences in an ever-expanding and shifting media landscape. The programme has been designed to meet the needs of both students who have just finished Undergraduate programmes and those returning to learning who may have already developed their own independent media practice. Your practice will be at the heart of the programme and you will have the opportunity to develop your professional profile. You will focus on independent and entrepreneurial practice, including engagement with innovative digital storytelling strategies, platforms for distribution of work and methods of practice-based research. Opportunities are also available to explore exciting creative partnerships with students studying Theatre, Music and Music Production. Our experienced lecturers have worked in a range of different fields of media practice and research and the Department is equipped with production facilities, equipment and software suitable for producing film, television, radio, podcasts and other forms of immersive storytelling.

About this university
The International Student Support team are on hand to help the students travelling from outside the UK on their arrival in York. Their services include a welcome and orientation program that includes different elements for levels of study and access to English language help for those to whom it isn't a native language. There are also regular drop-in sessions to help with matters such as finding work between classes, financial advice and help with immigration and visas. There is also a number of options to help students learn more about York and enjoy their time in the city including making use of local tourist attractions such as the Jorvik Viking Centre and the National Railway Museum. The Student Union is responsible for the representation of students at York St John as well as organising extracurricular activities. The union offer help and advice on a range of subject to its members including health and wellbeing matters, financial advice and even learning support. These services are based in the Holgate Student Centre. There is also a student union bar located in Phoenix Court offering a great place to meet friends and get hot and cold food and drinks. There are a number of sports clubs with considerable history behind them including the rowing club, founded in 1852 and the rugby club that was founded in 1883, also the biggest club on campus. The football club dates to 1883 and has featured a number of England international players while the cricket club is another of considerable age, dating from 1848. There are around 30 different societies on offer to students including performing arts such as drama and singing as well as interest and academic subjects such as psychology and primary education. All are in contention for the Society of the Year award awarded at the annual ball.
