About this university

History
Bangor University is a university based in the city of the same name in Gwynedd, North Wales. It was one of the founding members of the former University of Wales and was originally founded in 1885 when it received a Royal Charter. It was known originally as the University College of North Wales and became Bangor University in 2007.
International students
The International Student Support Office is the first place for international students to contact when studying in Bangor. They are available to provide help and advice in a range of areas including immigration and visas as well as bringing family members to Wales while studying. They are based in the Rathbone Building on College Road. They also organised English Language Preparation Courses for students to whom English isn’t a first language and range from general courses to pre-sessional and summer courses as well as those while students study. The website also provides information on a by-country basis to use before arriving in the country including entry requirements. The Student Union is responsible for the organisation of services and support for students outside the classroom and all students are automatically members. Included in the societies available to students are a number of volunteering opportunities including through Student Volunteering Bangor that has some 30 projects it is associated with as well as Bangor RAG. There are a total of 150 societies including academic and sports clubs with notable sports including the football and rowing clubs. Fun recreational sports such as canoe-polo and sub-aqua are also available for fitness fans. There are religious societies such as the Christian Union and the Islamic Society as well as hobbies and interest groups such as comedy, drama and photography. There is also a student run radio station called Storm FM. In addition, there is the Student Services department based in the Rathbone Building on College Road who are available to help with a wide range of issues such as financial assistance, careers advice and employment guidance.
Campus life
The university doesn’t have a main campus but rather buildings spread around the city of Bangor as well as some departments based in nearby Wrexham. The oldest building is the Penrhyn Arms Hotel, a grade I listed building that was the original Art building. The former Refectory is now the Steve Biko House and has a nightclub while the Student Union is based in the new Pontio Arts and Innovation Centre. The Normal Site is found on the Menai Strait and is the site of the School of Education, Sport Health and exercise Sciences while the School of Ocean Sciences is nearby. It is named for the Bangor Normal College that was once an independent institution. The first halls of residence is University Hall, a Queen Anne style building that opened in 1897. It is now known as Neuadd Rathbone. Neuadd Reichel was built on a former farm site in neo-Georgian style and opened in 1942. In the 1960s, a number of new developments led to addition buildings and there is now accommodation for some 2000 students within the halls. In addition, the largest accommodation site is Friddoedd in Upper Bangor. There are eleven new halls at the site as well as a sports centre, bar and shops.
