About this university
Staffordshire University is a university spread over two sites in the county town of Stafford and the nearby city of Stoke-on-Trent. The root of the university was an institution teaching mining classes in 1906 that later became the Central School of Science and Technology. After various additions and changes of name, it took its current name and became a full university in 1992. It is a member of the Million+ and Association of Commonwealth Universities.
International students can make the International Student Support team their first point of call when arriving in the UK. They offer a specialist service for those from outside the UK that includes an immigration advice service and help with applying for entry clearance to the country as well as an extended visa. There is the Welcome Team who offer help when students first arrive as well as sorting matters such as getting a bank account, accessing health care and even bringing a family to the country while studying. There are English language resources to help those to whom it isnâ€™t a native language as well as range of social activities and other events to enjoy their time and learn more about the UK. The student unions is on hand to help students with a range of advice and guidance across various issues that may affect them during their time at university. They offer representation to their members as well as both academic and non-academic advice on a range of topics, all confidentially. Among the services offered by the students union at the university are almost 100 clubs and societies to occupy time outside the classroom. These range from popular sports such as football and rugby to fitness activities such as kayaking or even cheerleading. All sports take part in the BUCS leagues against other colleges and universities.
The university operates across two main campuses with four smaller ones and links to a number of institutes around the country and world. Both the main campuses and the smaller one in Lichfield are all purpose built Business Villages. The Stoke campus is focused on law, business, sciences as well as arts and design courses. It operates across two areas, one on College Road and one on Leek Road. A new Science and Technology area opened near the railway station in 2012. The Stafford campus is home to technology and computing courses as well as nursing, midwifery and other health courses. The Beacon Building on the campus has a range of technology facilities including a TV studio and 3D animation lab. Nursing courses are taught on Blackheath Lane in the former Shropshire and Staffordshire College of Nursing and Midwifery. Other campuses include the Lichfield campus near the railways station, nursing courses in Shrewsbury, Telford and Oswestry as well as around 5000 students across sites around the world including in China, France, Singapore and Nigeria. All first year students are guaranteed accommodation within the university. There is a hall of residence on the Stafford campus called Stafford Court with over 250 en-suite bedrooms and another 290 single study bedrooms. The accommodation at Stoke is around the Leek Road area while there are various off-campus options around the city. The university also has connections with third party providers around both cities.
