About this university
The University of Bath is a university located in the city of the same name in the south-west of England that received its royal charter in 1966. Its roots came from a technical school established in nearby Bristol in 1856, the Bristol Trade School and a pharmaceutical school in the city called the Bath School of Pharmacy. It joined the Technical College, as it became in 1929 and went through several name changes until it came under the Ministry of Education. It finally became the University of Bath in 1963.
When attending the university from outside the UK, there is a variety of help and assistance available to students. This starts from the application process and goes right through the time spent at the university. There is practical help including how to accept the offer to attend the university and organising legal paperwork such as visas and immigration papers. There is also help with English language skills for those who don’t speak the language and an international induction program to assist with integration within the city and area. There is even help with accommodation eligibility and student funding where needed as well as an airport collection service. The Student Union is recognised as one of the top organisations of its kind in the country and runs over 100 clubs from sports to arts, cultural and interest to faith societies. Notable among these are the Bath RAG, which raises money for local charities; the Arts Society that includes theatre, musicals, dance and other performance arts and three student media outlets. Sport plays a very important part of student life at the university and the sports are organised by TeamBath. It has one of the best sports facilities in the UK spread over three locations with two on Claverton Down and the third a few miles away in Combe Down. Facilities rank from fitness suites, squash courts, athletics tracks, basketball and badminton courts as well as centres for sports medicine and science.
The main campus of the university is found 2km from the centre of Bath on a site called Claverton Down. It is a compact site taking just fifteen minutes to walk from one side of to the other and has raised pedestrian walkways through the centre known as the Parade. The centre of the campus is the library and Learning Centre, with its round-the-clock computer services as well as books and journals. There are also food outlets, banks and shops on the campus. There are accommodation blocks to the northern edge of the campus while the university also owns buildings in the town centre including residences. In addition to the Bath campus, the university also has a second site called Oakfield Campus in Swindon. The university offers a range of accommodation under both the campus and city categories. There are single gender and mixed gender flats available, though there is no guarantee about getting this type. Mature students can also request to live with others of their age group in special areas. There are nine residence halls in total on the campus with varying facilities within the rooms and prices accordingly.
