About this university

History
The University of Birmingham is research university based in the Edgbaston suburb of the city of Birmingham in the Midlands of England. It was given its royal charter in 1900 and was the successor of the Queen's College Birmingham, itself founded back in 1828 as the Birmingham School of Medicine and Surgery. This means it is the first "red brick" university to receive an independent royal charter. Today it is a member of the Russell Group of universities as well as the Universitas 21 international group. It is also home of the barber Institute of Fine Arts that contains important works by Monet, Picasso and Van Gogh as well as the Lapworth Museum of Geology, the Cadbury Research Library and the prominent local landmark, the Joseph Chamberlain Memorial Clock Tower.
International students
The International Students Advisory Service (ISAS) is available for all international students attending the university to provide support and advice across a number of areas. These include matters such as visas and immigration, living and working in the UK and workshops for students outside the classroom. They are also available to help with matters such as students bringing families with them and organising social events around the country to make the most of their time in Birmingham. The University of Birmingham Guild of Students is the students union of the university, which has its origins in the guild of undergraduates dating back to the 1870s. It supports some 180 clubs and societies across a range of subjects and interests from sports and arts to volunteering as well as representing students in various ways. The university ranks in the top five in the BUCS league of British universities.
Campus life
The main campus of the university is found just three miles south-west of the centre of Birmingham in the Edgbaston area. It centres on the Joseph Chamberlain Memorial Clock Tower, commemorating the first chancellor of the university. The Great Hall is found in the Aston Webb Building, named for one of the architects and were built with a grant from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The campus is the only one in the UK to have its own railway station connected to the Cross-City Line. There is also the Winterbourne Botanic Gardens on campus while a regular farmers market is now the first accredited one in the country on a university campus. A secondary campus is found at Selly Oak, a short distance to the south that is home to the Department of Drama Theatre Arts and the University of Birmingham School. The university also operates centres such as the Shakespeare Institute in Stratford upon Avon and the Ironbridge Institute in Ironbridge. Housing is provided for most all first year students and 90% of housing is inhabited by these first years. One of the main housing complexes is Vale Village where around 2,700 students live in residence halls and flats. Another 700 live in Pritchatts Park Village and three further residences are found on the Selly Oak campus.
