About this university

The University of Dundee campus

The University of Dundee is a public research university in the city of the same name on the east coast of Central Scotland. It was founded in 1881 and began life as a constituent college of the University of St Andrews. It expanded significantly and became an independent institution in 1967, retaining much of its ancient heritage and structure.

International students

For students travelling from outside the UK, the International Advice Service is available to help them with all aspects of the transition. They offer confidential advice and help on matters such as immigration and visas, working during and after studies as well as community group information and links to international hospitality schemes. There is support for international families as well as arranging cultural and social events during the year aimed primarily at international students. They are based in the Enquiry Centre on Campus Green or via email. Students are represented by the University's Student Representative Council while the Students Association organises the societies, clubs and organisations outside the classroom. It is unusual because it isn't a member of the National Union of Students due to cost and political considerations. The union is based in Airlie Place, at the centre of the main campus and has a bar, nightclub and refectory on site. There are 42 clubs associated with the Sports Union at the university and these have annual award ceremonies as well as an annual Ball. A multi-million pound redevelopment saw a number of new facilities for sports around the university including the first UK gym with mp3/mp4 compatible personal viewing screens.

Campus life

The main campus of the university is found in the West End of the city, which also contains the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design and the Dundee Dental Hospital and School. It is known as Green Campus and is only five minutes from the city centre. It includes a state of the art library, swimming pool, gym facilities as well as the Student's Union building and offers a friendly atmosphere to make students feel at home. Additional facilities are found at Ninewells Hospital "the School of Medicine and the Perth Royal Infirmary" as well as a clinical research centre and a campus in Kirkcaldy, Fife containing the Nursing and Midwifery schools. Students' residences are spread around the city. These include Belmont Hall on the main campus combining Belmont Tower dating from the 1950s and the modern Balfour Flats area. Belmont Flats is another new style hall in the Old Hawkhill area while Heathfield opened in 2006 and is opposite Belmont Hall. Seabraes has a number of new flats, is located to the south of the main campus in the Roseangle area while West Park is further away, and is popular with medical students attending the Ninewells Hospital.
