About this university

History
The University of Liverpool is a public university found in the city of the same name in the north-west of England. It was founded originally in 1881 as the University College Liverpool and received its royal charter as a university in 1903, meaning it is one of the original ‘red brick’ universities. It is a founder member of the Russell Group as well as the N8 Group its Management schools are AACSB accredited. The university was the first to establish departments in oceanography, civic design, architecture and biochemistry as well as the first to have an independent campus in China.
International students
The International Support Team is on hand to help students travelling to Liverpool from outside the UK. They can help with matters such as visas and immigration advice, organising Welcome Week and its relevant details as well as presentations and workshops to help integrate with the new community. Further practical advice comes from living and working in the area as well as financial assistance and even improving English, if this isn’t a student’s first language. The Guild of Students is responsible for arranging the 190 clubs and societies available to students outside the classroom. These cover areas such as volunteering, the arts and sports. There are also plenty of opportunities to try something new and experiment with something different as well as practical, hands on societies to try a practical activity. Sports are very important at the university and many of its teams are in the higher tier of university sports. Sport Liverpool is the current heading of the sports clubs and groups and cover nearly 50 different types from cricket and football to windsurfing and lacrosse. Most compete for both men and women. There are also support services available to students as well as student health assistance and plenty of learning resources to assist with studies.
Campus life
The main campus is located just five minutes’ walk from the city centre at the top of Brownlow Hill. It covers some 100 acres and is made up from nearly 200 non-residential buildings including 69 lecture theatres, over 100 teaching areas and state of the art research facilities. The site is divided into the three faculties with the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and the Ness Botanical Gardens being based nearby on the Wirral Peninsula. The original red brick building, the Victoria Building, remains the heart of the campus. It was opened in 1892 and has been refurnished to now include a café, activities area and the Victoria Gallery and Museum. The Central Teaching Hub is the multi-use building that now houses over 1,000 students for lectures across seven separate spaces as well as numerous other facilities. The Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University was the first independent UK university in China when it opened in 2006. It is based in the Suzhou Industrial Park in the Jiangsu province, 90km west of Shanghai. It is focused on science and engineering as well as management. Student accommodation on the main site is spread over fifty buildings and provides over 3,300 rooms both catering and self-catering. In addition to the traditional halls, three new ones have been added in recent years after a £660 million investment. As well as accommodation on campus, there is also the Carnatic Student Ville and the Greenbank Student Village offering addition accommodation places.
