    History

The University of Manchester is a public research university in the city of Manchester in the north-west of England. The first higher education centre in the city was the Mechanics Institute founded in 1824, founded by leading industrialist of the time. It later became the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, which merged, with the Victoria University of Manchester in 2004 to create the new University of Manchester. The university is a member of the Russell Group as well as the N8 Group.

    International students

Students attend the university from over 150 countries around the world and there are various systems in place to help them adapt to their new life. The Student Immigration Team is a dedicated team in place to help with support and advice regarding immigration and visas and are based at the Student Services Centre. The student support centre is a single contact point for all students to help with matters such as finances, examinations, graduation and other matters. There is also help and advice on hand for matter such as integration into the community, learning English and making the most of the time in the UK. The centre of student life is the Students Union (UMIST), which formed at the same time as the university was created in 2004. It is run by an eight-member team rather than a single president. The athletics Union is responsible for the sports clubs within the university and there are over 80 health and fitness classes in addition to 44 sports clubs. There are around 250 societies and clubs in total across many areas of interest including a student run newspaper, radio station, a fundraising organisation, a volunteer project and across the arts and politics arena.

    Campus life

The main area of the university is integrated with the city of Manchester itself rather than having a specific, separate campus. The area of the university is roughly boot shaped with the North Campus centred around Sackville Street and the South Campus focused around Oxford Road. A secondary campus, Fallowfield Campus, is around 2 miles to the south of the main area. The merger of the two former universities saw the creation of a number of new buildings including a new flagship University Place building and the Alan Turing Building for the Mathematics department. Buildings left from previous times includes the Old Quadrangle, from the time of Owens College, designed in a Gothic style and dating from the late 1800s. Also on campus is the University of Manchester Library, the largest non-legal deposit library in the country and the third largest academic library. Manchester Museum is home to over 4 million items from around the world while the Whitworth Art Gallery has an internationally famous collection of watercolours and textiles. The resident facilities have mostly come from the former universities including Whitworth Park Halls of Residence, housing over 1,000 students and known for its triangular shaped accommodation blocks. There are five halls close to Sackville Street as well as on the Victoria Park Campus and at Fallowfield.

Chart description

These charts show how many students from your university and others applied to the destination university/field of study. Students in the charts shown received offers that were either conditional on additional documentation or unconditional. Others had their applications rejected.

The results are only accurate for academic scores. We highly recommend receiving professional advice from one of our counsellors. Our free services ensure application documents are the best they can be. We estimate that doing so can boost your chance of admission by 5% to 20%.

Acceptance description

The "acceptance chance" is a weighted average of up to three partial scores regarding your academic score/GPA compared to:

  • The official requirements from the university
  • The minimum acceptable academic level according to our experienced counsellors
  • Previous applicants who received offers of admission

If your "chances" are 50%, then we estimate that one out of two people from your university with your academic result would be accepted.

Our algorithm gives a good estimation but focuses on academic scores only. Academic scores are not the only factor. Your language ability, work experience, and activities outside of the classroom will also play a role.

The search results presented are based on students who have received professional advice from one of our counsellors and used our services to ensure application documents are the best they can be. We estimate that using this free service can increase your chance of admission by 5% to 20%.
