About this university

History
The University of Southampton is a public university found in the city of the same name on the south coast of England. It is a research intensive university and one of the founding members of the Russell Group. It was founded as the Hartley Institution in 1862 with a legacy from Henry Robertson Hartley. It became the Hartley University College in 1902 and was given a royal charter in 1952, becoming the University of Southampton.
International students
Students from 135 countries regularly attend the university and he International Office is the main point of reference for them, as well as for students wanting to make use of the international campus in Malaysia. They are available to help prospective and new students with the various processes involved with studying in the UK such as immigration and visas paperwork, funding issues and other legal matters. Student life outside the classroom is organised by the Students' Union, based in three buildings opposite the Hartley Library. It is separate from the university and generates its own funds from various activities. It is responsible for the organisation of the many clubs and societies found around the universities sites including the award-winning student radio station, Surge and a TV station. There is also a newspaper and magazine run by the students. The union operates a nightclub, cocktail bar and pub as well as a concert venue. Sports at the university come under the guidance of the Sport and Wellbeing department and they operate across two main venues, the Jubilee Sports Centre and Wide Lane Sports Ground. The university competes in numerous sports in the BUCS South East Conference.
Campus life
The university has six campuses in total, four of which are in Southampton, one in Winchester and one in Malaysia. It also operates a science park near the city and owns a number of facilities and halls of residence nearby. The main campus is in the Highfield area of the city and has been part of the university since 1914, after it had been a military hospital. The Avenue Campus is the home of the Faculty of Humanities, apart from Music, and is a short distance from Highfield. The third campus is the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS) found at Southampton Docks, three miles from Highfield, which is also home to a number of purpose built research vessels. Southampton General Hospital is operated in partnership with the university and is home to the Faculty of Medicine and of Health Sciences. The Winchester site is home to the Winchester School of Art as well as the Faculty of Business and Law. All first year students are provided with accommodation places if required as well as for older students where possible. There are both catered and self-catering facilities as well as those with their own bathrooms and those sharing. The two main complexes of halls are the Glen Eyre Complex and the Wessex Lane Halls Complex, with a number of other accommodation options around the city as well as university owned property in Portsmouth and Basingstoke.
