About this university

History
The University of Winchester is a public university in the city of the same name in Hampshire. The city itself is an ancient cathedral city and the university has its roots in the Winchester Diocesan Training School, founded by the Church of England in 1840. It was renamed the King Alfred's College in 1928 and was a men-only teacher training college. It changed to its current name in 2004 and was given university status the following year.
International students
The university offers plenty of information for students travelling from outside the UK starting before they leave home. There is information by country for the application process as well as assistance with visas and immigration issues. There is a guarantee for accommodation for international students that means there is no concern about finding somewhere to live and plenty of information on other daily life issues such as banking, healthcare and bringing a family to the UK. There is even the opportunity to book a pick-up from the airport to ensure you arrive at the university without any problems. Winchester Student Union organises much of life outside the classroom for its students, all of whom are automatically members. This includes operating societies and sports clubs, a shop, bars as well as organising support for its members and providing representation. It is based within the University Centre and has a 850 seat venue with cinema, three bars and the shop. Regular events are held here including comedy nights. It also operates a number of student media opportunities including an online news outlet. In the societies and clubs area is something for all tastes. These run from various team sports as well as fitness activities and even martial arts clubs. There are dance and performance clubs to bring out a student's artistic side as well as music clubs and groups. There are international and culture groups to meet up with others from a similar background or learn about a new culture while the community volunteering groups allow students to give something back to the wider community. There are also opportunities to get involved with the running of the union, both organisational and with the representation of other students.
Campus life
The main campus of the university is called the King Alfred campus and is close to the city centre. A number of the buildings are named for prominent former staff members while others are named for saints from the Anglo-Saxon period. It has seen a good deal of modernisation in recent times including a new University Centre containing the student union, catering facilities, a bookshop, shops and a Learning Cafe with Wi-Fi. Sports facilities were added with a grant from Sport England and include an eight lane athletics track, sport pitches with floodlights and an extended pavilion. There are on and off campus options in student accommodations that means students can find something that suits them. there are both catered and self-catering halls on the campus as well as similar options off campus and even connections with private houses to find somewhere to life around the city. The on-campus accommodation includes 24-hour security, a site steward who is first aid trained and a police liaison to help out if there are any problems.
