University of Bedfordshire campus


The University of Bedfordshire is a public university spread over campuses in Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire in England. It has its roots in the Bedford Teacher Training College that was founded in 1882 and the Bedford Physical Training College founded 1903. It later merged with the University of Luton and became a full university under its current name in 2006.

International students

There are an average of 3000 international students attending courses at the university each year. Help and advice starts on the website for these students with country specific information about applying as well as information about visas and immigration. Once in the country there is plenty to help them settle in including assistance with daily life matters such as finding a bank account or registering for health care. There are accommodation options and plenty of help finding work between studies. The location of the university in relation to London also means there are plenty of experiences for international students to enjoy. Extracurricular activities are organised through the Students Union which also offers support and advice for its members as well as representation. It operates a number of social facilities including bars and cafes across the various sites of the university. There are around 50 different clubs and societies on offer ranging from cultural and interest groups to sports, religious and even political themes. These include the Bangladeshi and Nigerian cultural societies and the Amnesty International club. Recreational groups include art, chess, computing, gaming and photography to name a few. There are also a number of RAG events during the year where students can volunteer on different projects to help the larger community and different causes. Sports clubs include recreational and team sports from traditional sports such as athletics and cricket to martial arts and even table tennis groups.

Campus life

The two main campuses of the university are found in the towns of Bedford and in Luton. Both have seen recent regeneration including to campus accommodation. The Luton campus opened in 2010 and incorporates learning zones, as well as lecture theatres and an exhibition area for students work. There is the Student Union offices and several food and drink outlets. The Bedford campus is around 20 minutes’ walk from the town centre and includes the Physical Education and Sport Science Centre along with other features. There is a free bus service connecting the two. The Putteridge Bury campus is home to the Business School and the Knowledge Hub, set amid 30 acres of landscaped gardens and containing a building completed in 1911 and designed in the style of Chequers. The Butterfield Park campus is a purpose built area for the Health, Midwifery and Nursing students to the north-east of Luton town centre and close to Putteridge Bury. Further health courses are on the Oxford House campus near Aylesbury while the Information and Communications Technology courses are based in the Milton Keynes campus. The university offers a range of different accommodation options across its campuses. On the Luton campus there is the Student Village with a range of studio flats with kitchen facilities, on-suite rooms and even standard bedrooms with shared bathroom facilities. On the Bedford campus there is also a Student Village with the same range of different options available. In addition to this is the Liberty Park residence, a new purple built accommodation option with 400 single and over 100 double study bedrooms. Finally, the university can also help students find third party providers of accommodation around the area.
