The Masters by Research in American Studies provides the opportunity to undertake a personalised programme of study in a structured and supportive environment. As a research-led programme it is inherently flexible, tutorials can be scheduled around other commitments, and meaningful distance learning can be facilitated. With options to study full time for a year or part- time over two years, this programme is a significant qualification in its own right but could also fast-track successful applicants to MPhil and ultimately to PhD qualifications. The research and writing skills together with the specialist disciplinary knowledge developed during the programme enhance employability and can be invaluable grounding for careers in teaching, media and journalism, publishing and marketing.
This programme of independent study attracts highly motivated students with a strong first degree. A first class or upper second class honours degree in American Studies or a relevant discipline is required. Holders of other qualifications will be considered individually. International students whose first language is not English require an IELTS overall score of 7 with a 7 in reading and writing. International students can also be accepted if they have completed an English-medium degree with a significant research element.
