Our LLM Legal Aspects of Medical Practice, established in 1987, aims to provide a sound knowledge of the legal rules applicable to, and the issues surrounding, the practice and administration of healthcare, as well as the ethical principles underpinning these rules.The law relating to medicine and healthcare has become increasingly complex and patients are becoming more aware of their legal rights and the ethical principles which underline these rights. This has significant consequences for healthcare practices, the regulation of healthcare, and the relationships between patients and members of healthcare teams. This includes complex areas like patient information and consent, legal and professional regulation of healthcare professionals, clinical negligence, and beginning and end-of-life issues. Changes in the structure of the NHS are also giving rise to a number of important legal problems. Furthermore, an increased understanding of ethics and how this relates to both the practice and regulation of healthcare provide a ready source of criticism for existing and proposed legal rules.The part-time, distance-learning programme is taught via a series of teaching blocks, each of which is delivered across a weekend. This enables you to fit study into your current working arrangements while still allowing for the creation of a learning community.You will have the opportunity to study topics in-depth and conduct research in areas of medical law and ethics of particular interest to you. The programme:
- Covers a wide spectrum of healthcare law and ethics topics;
- Stimulates a critical approach to evaluation of current and proposed regulation and cultivates independent and original thought;
- Enables you to undertake in-depth research and demonstrate advanced knowledge in specific areas of law.
- Deepen understanding: hone the skills and expertise to navigate issues within healthcare law and ethics with our recognised experts.
- Networking opportunities: benefit from sharing knowledge and experiences with students from a broad range of specialisms.
- Multidisciplinary: explore the interactions between law, healthcare and ethics and how they can be used to resolve difficult cases in healthcare.
- Professional development: CME points will be awarded to doctors where appropriate.

There is plenty of help and advice on offer to students who are travelling from outside the UK to study in Cardiff. This includes information on immigration and visas, with the main website having advice for each individual country. There is also help regarding fees and funding and even how to apply for the university. Once students are committing to attending, there is help to prepare for their time in Cardiff as well as assistance once they arrive. There is also an International Student Support service dedicated to the welfare of students travelling from abroad. They can help with matters such as getting into employment, changing studies and for those bringing families with them. Cardiff University Students Union is the representative of the student body as well as being in charge of the various organisations and clubs on offer. Their building is found near the Cathays railway station and the union also operates a nightclub, radio station and student newspaper. Other services provided include cafes, bars and shops. There are some 150 clubs and societies to get involved with outside the classroom. All offer everything from complete beginners to experienced levels and range from debating societies, volunteering opportunities to student media and other arts. In the sports arena, there are some 60 competitive and non-competitive sports clubs, most of whom take part in the BUCS leagues.
