Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine is an ever-emerging interdisciplinary field of biomedical research; which combines life, engineering and materials sciences, to progress the maintenance repair and replacement of diseased and damaged tissues. The MSc in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine aims to provide graduates from life sciences and clinical backgrounds with an advanced knowledge, understanding and skills in the science and practice of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine; from theoretical science, through to research translation and clinical application. The Programme provides in-depth training in this branch of biomedical science, including stem cell biology, biomaterials and tissue/organ engineering. The MSc offers a balanced combination of theory and practice; and can serve either as preparation for a PhD or as a self-contained advanced qualification in its own right. The MSc in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine is both lecture- and laboratory-based, and includes a number of opportunities to visit relevant clinical settings and local industrial partners. Graduates from this Programme will have a broad spectrum of knowledge and a variety of skills, making them highly attractive both to potential employers and research establishments. The programme further benefits from affiliation and close involvement with the Cardiff Institute of Tissue Engineering and Repair (CITER). CITER is an interdisciplinary research network between the Schools of Biosciences, Chemistry, Dentistry, Engineering, Healthcare Studies, Medicine, Optometry, Pharmacy and Social Sciences. Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine MSc students will therefore study within a multidisciplinary community with internationally excellent academic, research and clinical expertise. Students will acquire and develop a range of valuable skills, both specific to tissue engineering and regenerative medicine as well as generic ‘employability skills’. Through the Programme, students will develop technical laboratory skills and will be presented with a number of opportunities to extend their communication and presentation skills, both written and orally. Students will acquire a number of specific skills, such as the ability to collect, analyse and interpret a range of complex quantitative and qualitative data. They will also develop a number of valuable laboratory research-based skills, through the completion of a dissertation, which will be presented as a poster at the annual CITER scientific meeting.

There is plenty of help and advice on offer to students who are travelling from outside the UK to study in Cardiff. This includes information on immigration and visas, with the main website having advice for each individual country. There is also help regarding fees and funding and even how to apply for the university. Once students are committing to attending, there is help to prepare for their time in Cardiff as well as assistance once they arrive. There is also an International Student Support service dedicated to the welfare of students travelling from abroad. They can help with matters such as getting into employment, changing studies and for those bringing families with them. Cardiff University Students Union is the representative of the student body as well as being in charge of the various organisations and clubs on offer. Their building is found near the Cathays railway station and the union also operates a nightclub, radio station and student newspaper. Other services provided include cafes, bars and shops. There are some 150 clubs and societies to get involved with outside the classroom. All offer everything from complete beginners to experienced levels and range from debating societies, volunteering opportunities to student media and other arts. In the sports arena, there are some 60 competitive and non-competitive sports clubs, most of whom take part in the BUCS leagues.
