International Law continues to be of global relevance and importance to business practices, state agencies and legal advisers. With a broad appeal, this course attracts a variety of students, including law, international studies or politics graduates, as well as current legal practitioners. It provides an opportunity to enhance your knowledge of International Law, useful in almost any professional role and particularly so if you intend to pursue a career in an international field such as business, diplomacy or work for organisations with international operations.
We offer a varied and stimulating range of contemporary mandatory and optional modules, so you can shape the course to your best advantage or to suit your interests, with the option to specialise in international diplomatic relations, human rights law, corporate governance and environmental law.
We benefit from an extensive network of professional contacts, including The British Foundation for the University of the West Indies, Mills & Reeve LLP, The Commonwealth Secretariat, Leigh & Day Solicitors, No 5 Chambers (Birmingham), No 7 Bedford Row Chambers, (London), Bailey Wright & Co. Solicitors (Birmingham) and Angel Solicitors LLP (Coventry). We use these links to keep abreast of relevant contemporary issues within this dynamic sector. For example, we have recently examined the Brexit legal challenge and appeal to the Supreme Court, as well as the legal issues surrounding the approval for fracking to go ahead in the UK for the first time since 2011.
Receiving extensive guidance on research, study and writing skills, together with research design and methods, you’ll have the opportunity to conduct collaborative research within the sector on a topic of your choice. This previously has ranged from a look at whether how criminal sanctions can be imposed against corporations and a comparative analysis of criminal corporation liability for deaths in the workplace to the effectiveness of the Conventions Against Trafficking (CAT) in protecting victims and the definitions of violence in the Declaration of Violence against Women.
Key course benefits;
Opportunity to contribute to the Coventry Law Journal, published twice a year.
High levels of student satisfaction of 93% overall, above the sector average of 84%, in the Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES) 2016.

Annual Law Student Conference, which was run in collaboration the British Foundation for the University of the West Indies (BFUWI) and was attended by over 120 students at its launch in 2015 with the theme of ‘Global Careers in Law’.
Regular guest lectures from employers who specialise in different areas of the law, building your professional network. Recent speakers have included the Vice President and Chief Accountability Officer at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, USA, and a solicitor and legal skills research and study coach at the University of London.
Programme of international law research seminars, which have previously covered topics on International Civil Rights Law, whether or not the definition of torture in CAT should be extended to include rape or domestic violence and if states should be permitted reservations to fundamental articles to allow for cultural diversity.

Around one quarter of students at the university travel from outside the UK and their first point of contact is the International Students Hub. This offers a wide range of information and advice to help adjust to their new environment and integrate with the larger community. There is help for matters such as healthcare and accommodation advice as well as support services and even help with English, if this isn't their first language. The Students Union is both a charity and representative organisation for the students at Coventry. They are based in The Hub and support more than 100 sport clubs and societies as well as an advice centre and volunteering department. The union owns a nightclub on Far Gosford Street and there is a student run radio station called Source Radio. Sports teams play in a number of sports as well as in annual competitions against neighbouring University of Warwick. The societies cover all areas of life to bring together people with the same interests and students can even apply to start their own should they find a space for their interest. These range from cultural and international groups to faith societies and music and performance groups as well as politics and special interests.
