Students travel from around the world to study at the university and this means there is plenty of help and advice on hand for them. This starts with country-specific information about application and acceptance as well as information about immigration and visas. There is also support for students once they are in Lancashire with the International Department on hand for matters such as living and working in the UK while studying and travelling around the country. There are also British Culture programs on offer as well as English language for those wanting to enhance their English skills. The Student Union is the representative of students within the university and responsible for organising the clubs and societies for outside the classroom activities. It also operates a nightclub and bar as well as the annual Sports Awards, Fresher’s Ball and other annual events. There are also advice and support services for daily life available for students. There are some 70 different sports and societies on offer including sports such as football, rugby, swimming and golf as well as student run media opportunities, volunteer and charity work and much more. There is also the facility for students to get together with others and start their own club or society if they find a shared interest that doesn’t already have one. The university has its own not-for-profit record label operated by a former senior lecturer and bassist Carl Hunter. Called The Label Recordings, it offers placement for students as well as opportunities for bands and musicians to get their music to a wider audience.
