Global Media and Culture

Keele University has opted into the TEF and received a Gold award.

The course involves three main aspects:

• The study of theories and ideas about media and cultural production in a global context
• The critical analysis of cultural texts and practices from around the world
• Engagement in practical creative production.

The MA in Global Media and Culture seeks to explore the relationship between these three areas and to show how knowledge of each informs and influences the others. In addition, it will provide you with the skills necessary for academic study at an advanced level, either for those wishing to go on to further academic research, or as advanced preparation for those interested in pursuing careers in a range of media and culture industries.The emphasis of the programme is the critical and analytical study of the contemporary global framework of media and cultural studies, the production and continuation of localised cultural identities within a global context, and a theoretically-informed approach to the creative production of media texts.The Global Media and Culture programme at Keele University represents the multidisciplinary coming together of academics and practitioners from a range of fields. The distinctive nature of Keele as a pioneer for interdisciplinary academic study provides the Global Media and Culture Programme with an ideal basis for the development of cross-subject study.

Students travel from around the world to study at the university and there are various resources on hand to help them adjust. Within Student Services Centre is the International Students department, on hand to help with matters including immigration and visas, money and financial advice as well as learning English. This is ideal for students to whom English isn’t a first language and helps with studies but also with enjoying the larger community around Staffordshire. There is also advice and help for wellbeing issues such as nutrition and exercise, mental health and medical issues. The heart of student life outside the classroom is the Keele University Students Union. As well as being responsible for various clubs and societies it also organises a number of social events during the year and runs several bars, a restaurant and organises a farmer’s market on a Tuesday. There is student advice and help services within the union and it also operates its own magazine. There are also various student support services available including help with careers and employability, health and wellbeing matters and even money advice as well as general support and guidance. They can even assist with courses and study issues. At one time, the university was known for its left-wing political views but today there is a much wider scope on offer for students. These include the student radio station and a vast number of different sports. These range from rugby to dodgeball and make use of one of the largest dry leisure complexes in the county. There are two national standard sports halls as well as a gymnasium, fitness centre, dance studio and even a climbing wall.
