Our MSc Petroleum Engineering is accredited by the Energy Institute, under licence from the Engineering Council. This means that it meets the requirements for further learning for Chartered Engineer (CEng) under the provisions of UK-SPEC. Teesside is a major European centre for the chemical and petroleum processing sector, making it an ideal location for individuals seeking to study for an MSc with industrial relevance. The programme of lectures and project work, encompasses a wide range of petroleum fundamentals, pertinent to the modern petroleum industry. Project work provides an opportunity for ideas and methods, assimilated through lectures and tutorials, to be applied to real field evaluation and development design problems. The course is applied in nature and has been designed so that on completion, you are technically well prepared for a career in industry.The course provides specialist education tailored to the requirements of both the upstream and downstream petroleum industry. The relevance of this education combined with careful selection of candidates has encouraged oil and gas companies to target our graduates for recruitment over the years.
Applicants should normally have a good honours degree (2.2 or above) from a UK university or a non-UK equivalent qualification in an appropriate subject. Examples of suitable subjects include petroleum engineering, geology, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geophysics, chemical engineering, petrophysics, physics, mathematics or chemistry. Non-UK students must also meet the University's minimum English language requirements.

There is a large and varied international student population at the university and plenty to help them adjust to their new surroundings. From the beginning of the application process, there is help on hand including country-specific information and assistance with immigration and visas. Once in Teesside, there is support and advice from various sources including the Students Union who operate a number of different groups that may be of interest. There is also support for different faiths within the university and culture groups. Plus there is help on hand with matters such as financial advice, getting a bank account and working between studies. The Student Union organises the out of class activities for the students at Teesside and there are around 40 clubs and 20 societies to pick from, under the heading of SU Activities. There are also charity work opportunities through the Raising and Giving and other volunteer programs. The union also runs SU Link, providing help and advice to members on subject both academic and non-academic as well as encouraging students to take an active role in running their union. The clubs and societies available do cover all possible options. These range from cultural groups such as Chinese or Indian to those based around a faith such as the Islamic society. There are interest and academic groups including historical, chemical engineering and occupation therapy as well as performing arts such as drama. Sports range from competitive team sports such as football and rugby to fitness and well-being groups. The teams also take part in the various BUCS leagues against other universities and colleges around the country while the fitness activities make use of the various facilities across the campus create specifically for the students.
