Based within Manchester School of Architecture and awarded by Manchester Metropolitan University, the Master of Landscape Architecture is a route to an internationally recognised qualification in a fast growing, global profession. The MLA combines an emphasis on individual practice and an exploratory, experimental approach, with a strong professional underpinning. It is both a conversion course for graduates of related subject areas and a final postgraduate year of education for landscape graduates. As a part of the Manchester School of Architecture, based within Manchester School of Art, students have access to an impressive range of workshop and studio facilities, based in an award winning building, and all just a few minutes’ walk from the city centre.

Students eligible for the MLA will normally have a minimum of a second class degree in a closely related subject area. The following disciplines are typical although this is not an exhaustive list and the suitability of all applicants will be assessed via a combination of portfolio and interview. Candidates with a minimum of a second-class degree in an accredited UK undergraduate Landscape Architecture course will normally be accepted directly into Part 2 of the MLA. Candidates from other countries with an IFLA recognised undergraduate qualification of an equivalent standard may also be eligible for direct entry at year 2. Candidates from other very closely related disciplines (principally Architecture and Urban Design) may be considered, subject to providing evidence of a Level 6 understanding and knowledge of additional subject areas specific to landscape architecture.

With such a large student body, there are plenty of different nationalities represented within the university’s classes. For international students there is help and advice that begins before they arrive I the UK and continues while they are there. This includes specific information by the country for applicants, assistance with immigration and visas paperwork and even help finding accommodation. There is also lots of general help to integrate with the new community and find those with similar interests and culture to themselves. Finally, there is help with English should this not be a first language for students. The Union MMU is at the heart of activities outside the classroom for the university’s students. It has a building on both the campuses and is available to offer advice and guidance for its members as well as organising the various sports and interest clubs and societies. There are student forums held five times a year for students to voice their opinions on matters that affect them and student groups that have their own representatives as well. Student run media include a radio station, website and print media. The union building in Manchester covers some four floors and includes a bar and nightclub, shops and banking facilities, a student activities centre and advice centre as well as space for those working to run the union.
