Around 8% of students travel to Bolton from outside the UK, representing around 70 different countries. They come under the heading of the International Department who are on hand to help them with the various matters arising from studying in another country. There are country specific information on the website such as applications as well as visas and immigration information. There is also support and advice on hand for a range of different topics including matters such as getting a bank account or registering for health care. There are English language resources available for those wanting to learn or improve their skills in this area and guidance for matters such as bringing a family to Bolton and finding part time work between studies. There is also the International Society, a group to embrace the various groups and backgrounds at the university and share these with others. The main heart of extracurricular activity at the university is the Students Union, with its building on Deane Road in the main campus. This is also home to the bar and the support and advice facilities known as the Advice Unit. There are a number of sports for students to get involved with and among the facilities on offer for them to use is an eight lane 25 metre competition swimming pool, sports halls and a climbing wall. Sports range from basketball and football to both types of rugby and hockey. Away from sports there are various societies and clubs to get involved with ranging from academic interest groups to cultural groups such as the International Society and even those based around shared interest such as gaming. Performing arts including dance and drama have their own groups and students can also start their own should they find a gap in which their interest falls. Finally there are also charity and volunteering groups to help students give back to the community.
