課程介紹

The programme offers students the opportunity to study criminology at an advance level. The MA encompasses in-depth investigation of major theoretical and substantive issues in contemporary criminology from a critical perspective and within an international context.

Students aim to complete the MA award within twelve months of full-time study and twenty-four months of part-time study. Options also exist for students to defer the programme at intermediate stages with a Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma. The programme will appeal to those wishing to extend their knowledge of criminology, to explore alternative approaches/perspectives, and to broaden their understanding within an interdisciplinary, comparative and international context.
The MA will also be of interest to practitioners working in criminal justice; social care; crime prevention and community safety; youth offending and youth justice; forensics; child protection and victim support. These are also the career destinations for graduates. The MA programme follows the School’s normal structure for level 7 degrees of core subjects, optional subjects and a dissertation.

PLEASE NOTE: All of the information set out on this page about this programme relates only to the programme that commences in September 2018. From time to time we update our programmes, so the programme structure, mode, the courses and course structure and content can be subject to change from what is listed below. The availability of option courses also varies from year to year according to student preference, staff availability and may, for some courses, also depend on a student’s academic performance and/or educational background. Until the academic term immediately prior to the academic term in which an option is listed to run, we are not able to guarantee that an option listed will be available. In addition, please note that some courses may only be open to certain students and may also involve an application process which may include successfully passing a selection process to take the course. For these reasons, the structure (i.e. the mode(s), the courses and the course structure) of the programme shown in this information is shown for illustrative purposes only. Therefore, if your application is dependent upon studying a particular course (or courses), please contact the School of Law for advice at law@gre.ac.uk.

CAREERS

Employment opportunities in criminology continue to expand, here and abroad, with a huge variety of posts in criminal justice agencies such as the police service, probation service, prison service, Crown Prosecution Service and the magistracy. Posts are also available in social care, crime prevention, community safety, youth offending and youth justice, forensics, child protection and victim support.

Local and national government agencies and international governmental and non-governmental organisations also offer opportunities in policy research, public relations and specialist practice, such as working for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).

To ensure we deliver the best learning experience for our students, the structure and delivery of courses may change to reflect knowledge and industry standards. Course options illustrated here may not be available to all students and may not run every year.

There is a thriving international community at the university including students from over 100 countries around the world. The International Office is the first point of contact for these students and can help with a variety of matters around living in the UK. This includes assistance with accommodation, registering for medical services and immigration and visas advice. They help with the arrival in London while students get used to their new home and with daily life matters as well as academic ones. There are also language courses on offer for those wishing to learn or improve their English skills. At the heart of student life at the university is the Students Union and all students are automatically members. It offers a range of services to these members including academic and non-academic advice and support, representation and the organisation of various clubs and societies for extracurricular times. It also operates three different bars as well as a shop and an online shop for students. The university has a top record for its sports teams and there are a range of competitive and non-competitive activities on offer. Likewise the societies over all aspects of life including academic, activities and games, campaigning, cultural and performing arts as well as the chance to start their own should students find a niche.
