課程介紹

Overview

Many things rely on mechanical engineering – from mobile phones and biomedical devices, to aircraft and power plants. If you're ready to take your engineering studies further, our MSc Mechanical Engineering degree course will give you the skills you need to advance your career.

On this course, you'll develop an advanced understanding of core mechanical engineering disciplines, including design and critical evaluation of structural integrity, computation fluid dynamics, advanced materials, energy and control systems. You'll also pick up valuable transferable skills in creative thinking, critical analysis and team working.

You'll plan and produce a personal research project, and we'll provide the expertise and support so you can develop your professional practice. Once you graduate, you'll have all the tools you need for a career as a mechanical engineer.

You can start this course in September or January (full time only in January).

This course meets the UK Engineering Council's Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC), and is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). You'll also be on the path towards registration as an Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng).

What you'll experience

On this course you'll:

  • Get hands-on laboratory experience using our experimental and computational facilities dedicated to mechanical engineering, including advanced simulation and modelling software

  • Study structural integrity, control systems, advanced materials, energy systems, structural application of finite elements and computational fluid dynamics

  • Benefit from our links with industry partners in the UK and abroad, and have the opportunity to investigate real-life industrial problems

  • Tie-in your individual project with one of our research groups, and benefit from the expertise of our experienced research staff.

  • Research topics including aerospace materials, design engineering, polymers and composites, and energy engineering

Please note, if you're applying for this course as an international student, you'll need to have clearance under the Academic Tech Approval Scheme (ATAS). This is an extra security check made by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Careers and opportunities

When you graduate, you'll be qualified to work as a mechanical engineer in fields including design, research and development, manufacturing or the Armed Forces. You could choose to work in a small business within the mechanical engineering sector, or start your own specialist company.
What can you do with a Mechanical Engineering degree?

Career opportunities include:

  • Mechanical engineer

  • Product design engineer

  • Aerospace engineer

  • Application engineer

學校資訊

國際學生

There is plenty of help and advice on hand for international students that start from their arrival in Portsmouth. The university operates an orientation week that helps students find their way around the university and explore the services on offer. This also introduces them to the support services including those for academic and wider life and even meeting up with other students. These events are organised by the International Office, based within the Nuffield Centre who also organise events during the year and are point of call for international students. The Students Union offer a wide range of services as well as organising the clubs and societies for students to get involved with outside the classroom. The union was the first in England and Wales to register as a full charity in 2006 but has been in operation since at least 1911, when it published a magazine called The Galleon. It is now based in a building at the northern end of Ravelin Park and includes a student activities centre, a social learning space, a bar and a radio station. The clubs and societies at the university are organised into five different bodies: the Athletic Union, Societies, Student Media, Volunteering and RAG (Raising and Giving). There are some 40 plus sports clubs ranging from football and rugby to lacrosse, pole dancing and octopush, a type of underwater hockey. Societies includes everything from politics and lifestyle groups to a law society as well as the longest running paintball club in the UK.
