Accredited by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC), this degree prepares graduates to apply for registration with the SSSC or other social work regulators throughout the UK.With social work now establishing itself as a global profession, the programme curriculum fully reflects the differences, debates and tensions within global social work concerning the manner in which practice should be conducted and the way in which the profession should develop. Offering a challenge and stimulating range of learning opportunities, graduates will be equipped with the key attributes necessary to work in a varied, global working environment.
You will normally have an existing Honours degree at 2:1 or above in a relevant social science discipline. Consideration will be given if you do not meet this criteria but have extensive practical experience. You are particularly encouraged to apply if you have more than 6 months experience of working in the social care sector. Our course is professionally recognised by the Scottish Social Service Council (SSSC) and core to this recognition is that all applicants can demonstrate that they have literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to the Scottish Standard Grade 2 in both English and Mathematics. In addition, all applicants are strongly advised to provide information about modules studied at Undergraduate level in your application. You must demonstrate that you can study at the required level. International qualifications will be accepted providing that they provide equivalent credits to that specified within the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework. A satisfactory academic reference will be required in all cases. You must demonstrate that you have an understanding of the social work role and that you have the potential to become a social worker. If you meet these initial requirements you will be invited to take part in a group interview that will be co-facilitated by service users/carers/employers. There are an average of over 1100 international students at the university each year from some 70 different countries. Country specific information can be found on the website. As well as all the information on the website to help them apply and settle in, these students can also make use of the International Student Support service, available to help with a range of academic and non-academic issues such as visas, immigration and financial matters as well as accessing health care. There are also English language programs to help those wanting to learn or improve their English skills. The Student Union is the heart of activities outside the classroom for the students and offers them support, advice and representation. It also operates a number of bars across the campuses screening major sports events as well as holding regular themed nights such as comedy and poker. There is a student run radio station also broadcasting 24 hours a day available online. There are a wide range of sports available through the union across the different sites. These make use of the Trust Sports Centre in Paisley and the Hamilton Leisure Centre in Hamilton as well as other facilities. They range from traditional sports such as football and rugby to newer sports such as basketball and snow sports into fitness and self-defence activities such as tae kwon do classes and volleyball.
