Buckinghamshire New University

Buckinghamshire New University is a public university spread across sites in High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire and Uxbridge in West London. It dates back to the School of Science and Art, founded in 1891 and has been a university college from 1999 to 2007 when it gained full university status. It is a member of the GuildHE group.

There are a variety of resources on hand for international students who travel from around the world to study at Bucks. There are over 50 different countries represented and the university regularly has staff visit countries around the world. There is also the International Office in Bucks that can offer advice and assistance with matters such as applications, visas and immigration as well as bringing family to the UK while studying. As well as this is information about daily matters such as getting a bank account, a part time job or using health care services. The university runs a number of student services to help with the problems that can occur when studying, both academic and non-academics. There is a counselling service as well as careers and employability services while the students centre is the place to visit for all of this help. For extracurricular activities, these are provided by the student union and cover a vast range of interests. There are plenty of recreational activities to take up from one off sessions such as Thai cooking or mixology to regular classes including dancing and water sports. There are regular RAG events to get involved with and each year the union members vote on a charity to support for the twelve month period including Children in Need and Comic Relief in past years. Societies cover a range of interests from aviation enthusiasts to bloggers, cultural groups, religion and even games. In sports there are over 30 teams taking part in 20 different sports including traditional team and solo activities such as basketball, cricket, athletics and football to newer sports such as volleyball. Then there are the fitness activities such as karate and swimming as well as cheerleading.

The university operates across two main campuses – High Wycombe and Uxbridge. The High Wycombe campus has seen major redevelopment in since 2010 with the new Gateway Building being an award winning example of the work done. This is a state of the art complex that combines sports facilities, fitness halls, dance and drama studios and even video production suites with a learning resource centre and conference rooms. The Uxbridge campus is on Oxford Road and offers a range of modern facilities including library, computer areas, lecture theatres and even a cafeteria. There are a number of different halls of residence associated with the university. Brook Street Halls was the first to be built for the new university and has nearly 400 rooms, located just opposite the High Wycombe campus. Hughenden Park student village has another 400 rooms and is fifteens minutes’ walk from the campus while Windsor House is in the town centre. Alexandra House is the smallest hall and is near the Wycombe campus also. For those studying at Uxbridge, they can apply to the High Wycombe halls or use the university’s connections to find appropriate third party housing around the area.
