Canterbury Christ Church University is an Anglican new university in the city of Canterbury in Kent. It was originally founded as a teacher training college in 1962 and grew over the intervening period until it received its full university status on its 50th anniversary in 2012. It is a member of the Million +, Cathedrals Group and the Universities at Medway.
There are some 80 different countries represented at the university and a range of advice support and help on hand for them. The International Department provides a range of country specific information on the website to help with applications as well as funding and scholarships details. There is help from the International Student Support team who can offer non-academic advice in matters such as healthcare, housing, financial guidance as well as visas and immigration. There are also English language courses for those wishing to learn or better their skills in the language. Finally, there is assistance through Unitemps for those wishing to work between studies. There is a wealth of help and advice on hand for students at the university as well as extracurricular activities. There is a network of trained advisors to help with matters such as wellbeing advice, developing academic skills and even faith and religious matters. The university offers an Extra Award for students based around their activities outside the classroom and can be gained alongside degree studies. Opportunities include volunteering to help with the larger community as well as working in the Studentâ€™s Union. The union organise the various clubs and societies on offer ranging from interest groups such as the beach project and Harry Potter Society to culture groups such as the Asian Society. There are academic groups as well as sports and plenty of opportunities to try something new or even start your own society.
There are an number of sites around the city associated with the university with the original campus on North Holmes Road, the Augustine House area, Hall Place Enterprise Centre, the Sidney Cooper Gallery and the St Georges Centre. There are also secondary campuses in Tunbridge Wells and in Medway as part of the Universities at Medway partnership. North Holmes was the original site of the teacher training college and is now home to four faculties including arts and business. It is the largest higher education centre in Kent and includes the grade II listed church of St Gregory, now a performance centre for choirs and music ensembles. The Sidney Cooper Gallery was established by the cattle painter Thomas Sidney Cooper in 1868 and is now an art school with gallery space, exhibition areas and a cafÃ©. Broadstairs include three purpose built buildings with acoustic and sound isolation areas as well as a simulated hospital ward. There are accommodation options across Canterbury, Broadstairs and in Medway associated with the university. The Canterbury halls include single study bedrooms grouped into houses or flats that offer either en-suite or shared bathroom facilities. These include Dover Street, favoured by mature students and St Georges Centre, close to the centre of the city. There are two options at Broadstairs, Northwood Court and Headlease Housing, a third part housing provided working with the university. Finally, Medway has Liberty Quays a contemporary housing option with flats of 6-8 students sharing kitchen and lounge areas.
