Glasgow Caledonian University

The Glasgow Caledonian University, often referred to as Caley, is a public university in Glasgow, Scotland. It traces its roots back to The Queen’s College, Glasgow that was founded in 1875 as well as the Glasgow Polytechnic, founded in 1971. These combined in 1993 and took their new name as a university, the third in the city. It is a member of, among others, the University Alliance, the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the Universities UK.

Caley rates as the second best university in the UK for its international student satisfaction levels. A large part of this is due to the level of international student support on offer as well as the quality of lifestyle on offer. the International Support Team are available to assist with matters such as immigration and visas as well as daily living matters such as making the most of their time in the UK, working between studies and bringing a family to Scotland while they study. The service is based within the Saltire Centre in the main campus area of the university. Student life outside the classroom centres around the Students Union, itself an independent charity that represents the students, provides support and advice and organises the extracurricular activities. All students are automatically members. There is also a free law clinic within the university that assists students with legal advice and assistance particularly in matters such as housing, employment and contract law. The union runs a large selection of clubs and societies for students to get involved with. There are some 60 different societies ranging from culture and faith groups to hobby and interest societies. There are also volunteering and charity work opportunities for those seeking to give something back to the wider community. In addition, there are some 35 sports club including traditional and modern sports.

The university is found on a purpose-built site in the heart of the city centre as well as having a graduate campus in London (the first Scottish university to do this) and affiliate campuses in China and Oman. At the centre of the campus is the Saltire Centre, the hub of student life and a futuristic learning centre with a variety of support services, the university library and over 1800 study spots. There is a ground floor mall and a café with the building itself having won numerous awards for its design. Described as a ‘village within a city’, Caledonian Court is the university’s accommodation area. There are housing for some 660 students in a multicultural and safe environment with full furnished flats for six to eight people, each self-contained. It is just a short distance from the main campus area and has a range of modern facilities on offer such as cafes, shops and a health and fitness centre.
