London Metropolitan University

London Metropolitan University, often referred to as London Met, is a public research university spread across sites around the capital. The university as it is today was formed in 2002 by the merger of the University of North London and the London Guildhall University. However its roots are much older with the London Guildhall University having been formed in 1861 while the Northern Polytechnic Institute that became the University of North London dating from 1896.

There are an average of 7000 international students at the university from over 150 countries around the world. The International Student Advice Service is available to help with many of the queries and issues these students have ranging from immigration and visas to country specific application information. There is also help with daily life matters through a series of one to one and group sessions as well as with social events to enjoy their time in London. There are also English language skills courses for those wanting to learn or improve their grasp of the language. The drop-in advice centre is found in Tower Building on the Holloway campus. Student life outside the classroom focuses around the Student Union which provides representation, support and advice to its members. It also operates the various clubs and societies while running two social facilities, a bar on Holloway Road and another on Goulston Street which hosts a range of special events. There are also a range of student media opportunities to get involved with including a magazine, radio station, newspaper and a law publication. Clubs and societies range from sports to interest, culture and faith as well as academic subjects and into volunteering and charity work. Students can get involved with the running of the union and helping their fellow students as well as working in the larger community. They can even seek to set up their own group about a shared interest with others.

The university is spread across three main sites in London. The Aldgate campus is just a short distance from Brick Lane and close to the shops and eating places found there. It is close to the Aldgate East tube station as well as mainline train stations such as Liverpool Street. The Holloway campus is near the Emirates Stadium as well as the vintage stores and boutique shops of the area. It is opposite the Holloway Road tube station as well as a short walk from Camden and its facilities. The Moorgate campus is close to the City of London and within views of St Pauls Cathedral and the Tate Modern. It is within easy access of the Barbican area as well as the Moorgate tube station. Accommodation is handled through the Accommodation Bureau and can help students with housing through the university as well as through approved third party providers. There are a large number of housing options, some operated by specialist companies such as Viridian and Cass and Claredale. There are single study rooms as well as en-suite rooms and also flats. The university can also assist with finding short stay accommodation, summer housing and landlord services.
