London School of Economics and Political Science

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is a public research university located in the Westminster area of London specialising in social sciences. It is a constituent college of the federal University of London that was established by Fabian Society members in 1895. It joined the University of London in 1900 and began issuing degrees in 1902. Despite its name, there is a range of subjects on offer including mathematics, statistics, media, history and philosophy.

Nearly 150 countries are represented among the student body at the university and around two thirds of all students are from outside the UK. This means there are various sources of help and assistance on hand for international students including help with immigration and visas issues as well as English language courses. Most of this comes through the International Student Immigration Service who offer help before a student arrives, during their time at the university and also assistance after finishing their studies. They also operate the exchange programs, the Erasmus program and the Sciences Po undergraduate programs. At the heart of student life is the Student Union, a member of the National Union of Students and the University of London Union. It is often regarded as the most politically active in the UK, dating back to its activity in the 1960s. It operates out of a purpose built facility on the Aldwych campus. It is responsible for the organisation and undertaking of entertainment events and societies as well as student welfare issues. There are over 200 societies, 40 sports clubs and a busy media group within the university.

The main campus today is in the Clare Market and Houghton Street areas of Westminster, near the Royal Courts of Justice and Temple Bar. It moved there in 1902 and in 1920, King George V laid the foundation for the Old Building that today remains the heart of the campus. It has gradually expanded its reach into adjacent areas and now comprises some 30 buildings and twelve residence halls, two public hoses, a nursery school, medical centre and the West End theatre called the Peacock as well as sports grounds. Further additions to the campus include the Lincoln’s In Fields and the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre, base of the Student’s Union and accommodation offices. There are 12 residence halls around the centre of London, 10 operated by LSE itself and two other operated alongside Shaftesbury Student Housing. There are also eight intercollegiate halls shared with other colleges of the University of London and around 25% of all undergraduates live in these. All first year students are guaranteed accommodation while the larger postgraduate student body is also usually catered for. The largest student residence is Bankside, accommodating some 617 students across eight floors on the banks of the River Thames, overlooking the Tate Modern art gallery.
