學校歷史

Newcastle University is a public research university based in Newcastle upon Tyne in the north-east of England. It started out as the School of Medicine and Surgery founded in 1834, later becoming the College of Physical Sciences in 1871. It became a part of the University of Durham and merged with King’s College in 1937, finally becoming a university in its own right in 1963 with an Act of Parliament. The university is a member of the Russell Group and has one of the largest EU research portfolios in the UK.

國際學生

Newcastle attracts students from over 120 countries worldwide and there is plenty of help and advice on hand to assist them in adapting to life in the UK. The university has a system where every student has a personal tutor to assist them in both academic and non-academic matters and there is also a Student Wellbeing Service for confidence advice and help. There is a Visa and Immigration Team on hand to deal with legal matters relating to these areas and a Student Advice Centre within the Student’s Union for information on matters such as housing and finances. Finally, towards the end of studying, there is a Careers Service to help students find work or further their education as required. The heart of student life outside the classroom in the university is the Newcastle University Students Union. Unlike many students unions, NUSU owns the building that it operates from, following an anonymous gift in 1924 that allowed them to build a neo-Jacobean style building. It is run by six sabbatical officers and employs some 300 people in roles such as bar staff and entertainment organisers. In the media, there is a student run newspaper, established in 1948, called The Courier as well as radio station. The university is one of the leading in the UK for its sports programs and there are more than 50 sports clubs to become involved with.

校園生活

The main campus of the university is close to the Haymarket area of the centre of Newcastle, in the northwest part of the city. The oldest building on campus is the Armstrong Building, with the first part of it having been opened in 1888. The King’s Hall is the main ceremonial building seating 500 people and named for Edward VII. New additions include the Devonshire Building, opened in 2004, that has won awards for its green construction and use of photovoltaic cells for energy. The university’s library is the only in the UK to three times win the government Charter Mark for the excellence of its standards. In 2008, the university opened its first overseas campus in Singapore with the Medical School in Malaysia following in 2011. There is a range of catered and self-catering halls of residence available to first year students around the city. Options include study bedrooms within the halls of residence, standard facility bedrooms, en suite bedrooms as well as studios and self-contained flats. All have CCTV monitoring for safety and security and internet access. The university also has partnerships with private rented property providers around the city if there is no room left or if students want to live off campus. Popular areas for students to live off campus including Jesmond, Heaton and Sandyford.
