St Mary's University, Twickenham, is a research university found in the Strawberry Hill area of Twickenham in south-west London. It is acknowledged as the oldest Catholic university in the UK and was originally called St Mary's College, founded in 1850. It began a full university in 2014.
The location of the university and the range of courses on offer draw students from around the world. There is support and advice available from the very beginning of the process with application information on the website. There are also English language courses for those wanting to learn or improve their skills with the language. Regular events help students get the most from their time at the university and begins with Fresher's Week. There is also assistance on matters such as immigration and visas, finding accommodation in university halls or in the wider area and even daily life matters such as getting a bank account or using healthcare services. The Student Union offers representation and support for its members as well as operating a licensed bar and common room and a shop, all in the J-Building on the campus. It is also responsible for the organisation of the various sports clubs and societies on offer to students outside the classroom including student media such as the SMUC Radio station. The union is responsible for the organisation of a number of events including the Summer Ball, RAG Week and the Community Christmas Festival. The clubs and societies all get together for an annual award dinner also organised by the union. These clubs range across all interest areas. Sports are a particular focus and there are traditional sports available such as athletics, badminton, cricket and football as well as less common ones such as Gaelic football and kick boxing. The societies also cover traditional and modern including catholic and choir groups, the Christian Union, dance and drama groups as well as academic topics such as geography and history and even gaming appreciation groups. Finally mature students even have their own society and all students can look to form a new one through the union.
The main campus of St Mary's contains many historic buildings including the original Strawberry Hill House, with its Gothic Revival style. There are also a number of modern developments and additions to the site. Among the features on campus is the sports facility, opened by Lord Sebastian Coe in 2011. It is state of the art and includes an extensive fitness area, six badminton courts, four cricket lanes as well as a basketball, netball and handball court. There is also a large, separate tennis courts hall and a six land athletics track nearby. There is a cafe and refectory on the campus as well as the facilities of Twickenham nearby including bars, restaurants and leisure facilities, all within short travelling distance of the campus. There are a number of halls of residence all within some 10 minutes' walk of the campus. These includes Lady Frances Court, opened in 2005 near the university running track; Clive Halls; Waldegrave Park Houses on the edge of campus that are converted Victorian houses and the Old House, with 114 single study bedrooms by the main building on campus. Halls have communal kitchens with either en-suite or shared bathroom facilities. The university also has connected with local accommodation through approved suppliers and can used the accommodation office to help find the right match.
