The Robert Gordon University

The Robert Gordon University or RGU is a public university in the city of Aberdeen in Scotland. It was founded as a university in 1992 though it has its roots in the much older educational institution founded in the 18th century by Robert Gordon, a prosperous Aberdeen merchant. It is the younger of the two universities in the city, the other being the University of Aberdeen, and is rated as the best modern university in Scotland and the second-best in the UK.

Students travel from around 130 countries to study at the university and there is plenty of help and advice on offer for them. This starts with assistance in applying to the university and country specific information to pre-arrival advice. Once in Aberdeen there is career advice services, visas and immigration information as well as courses to help those who don’t speak English as a first language. There is also help with accommodation issues and finding the right place to live during studies. The Student Association is responsible for the clubs and societies within the university and are based in a building near the Administrative Building in the city centre. There are some 40 different societies available as well as another 32 sports clubs. Student media includes a magazine published every two months, a radio station and a TV station operating via YouTube. Sports facilities on campus include a 25m pool, various gym facilities and a large sports halls. There are a variety of fitness classes and physiotherapy options available in addition to the sports clubs. The association is also responsible for organising the Freshers Fayre held every September, a great place for students to get a feel for the university and for what they want to do outside the classroom.

The university has a single campus in Aberdeen in the south-western suburb of Garthdee. There is also an administrative building in the city centre in the Schoolhill area. This building is beside the Robert Gordon’s College and the Aberdeen Art Gallery, a listed building that was originally constructed in the Victorian period and carved from the granite that gives the city its nickname. The Student Union building is on the corner near the Administration Building. The Garthdee campus is home to all of the academic departments and is located just outside the city centre, on the River Dee. Buildings were added to the site starting in the 1950s and the later development saw the campus split into three zones with ‘University Street; lined with ancient beech trees running through the middle. Features on the campus include the RGU:SPORT building housing the campus sports and fitness centre; the Sir Ian Wood building home to the library and various departments as well Garthdee House, the Victorian manor that once formed the heart of the estate. There are nine halls of residence around the city for students totalling some 1500 beds. The largest is Woolmanhill Flats on St Andrews Street. There are some 700 one-person bedrooms in self-catering groups of eight with shared kitchen and lounge facilities. There are two halls on the Garthdee campus – the Square Tower and the Round Tower. Both are built with distinctive pink stone and are inspired by traditional Scottish tower houses.
