The University of Salford

The University of Salford is a public university just to the west of the centre of Manchester. It started as the Royal Technical Institute founded in 1896 and later became the College of Advanced Technology in 1956 and finally a full university in 1967. It is a member of the University Alliance, the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the North West Universities Alliance.

Students from around 100 countries come to Salford to study and there is plenty of application information available via the website. There is also plenty of help and advice on hand including English language courses for those to whom the language isn’t native. There is advice on matters such as immigration and visas, getting a bank account, accessing health services and working between studies. There is also various clubs and societies on offer of interest to international students as well as the chance to try something new. The Students Union is based on Peel Park campus and offers representation for students, a range of advice services as well as running the sports clubs and interest societies for its members. It also operates a bar and shops on the campus. There are some 80 different sports teams and activities most of which make use of the Sports Centre and take part in the BUCS leagues as well as annual events against the neighbouring University of Manchester. there is also a Give a Sport a Go program to help people try something different and work on their health and fitness as well as fitness activities as diverse as belly dancing and circus skills! Other societies and clubs cover a range of interests from academic to arts and international as well as performing arts, political subjects and religious groups. In the volunteering area, there is the Community Actions Teams initiative that gets students involved in programs around the larger community while the Enterprise initiative helps students gain skills that will make them more attractive to employers once they finish their studies.

The main campus is called Peel Park and sits on the banks of the River Irwell adjacent to Peel Park, one of the first public parks in the world, opened back in 1846. It is close to the Salford Crescent railway station as well as frequent bus services into the city. Other facilities of the university are close by at the Frederick Road and Adelphi campuses with the administration facilities on Salford Crescent opposite the campus. New developments to the campus include MediaCityUK, housing over 1500 students studying media subjects with various equipment and laboratory equipment as well as being home to five departments of the BBC. There is also Peel Hall, a 400 seat venue for music and other performances while the Robert Powell Theatre is named for the local actor. There are five halls of residence within the university. Eddie Colman and John Lester Courts house some 750 students in flats of two, three or four while Pendleton is the closest to the shopping centre of Salford. Constantine Court is the only en-suite hall with 80 rooms spread over seven houses and is close to the centre of the campus while Horlook Court is nearby and has some 160 rooms in 14 houses. There are additional halls near the Adelphi campus and the Castle Irwell Student Village houses around 1600 students on the site of the old Manchester Racecourse.
