The University of Nottingham is a public research university found in the city of Nottingham, England. It began life as the University College Nottingham in 1881 and was given its royal charter to become a university in 1948. It is a member of the Russell Group, Universitas 21 and the Universities UK group. The university is famous for the work on Magnetic resonance Imaging (MRI) carried out there for which Sir Peter Mansfield received the Nobel Prize in 2003. Other significant breakthroughs to which it has contributed include the discovery of silicone polymers and the work on in vitro culture of plants.

The International Office is the main place for international students to visit when they arrive at the university. It is staffed by a dedicated team of advisors that are there to help with the many issues that can arise from living and studying in a different country. They can help with matters such as immigration and visas, financial advice and family concerns. They are also on hand for matters such as employment and academic difficulties. They organise regular events and even trips to allow students from outside the UK to make the most of their time in the country and to see all that the UK has to offer. There is even help and advice for after studies have finished and students are looking for work. The Students Union are responsible for the organisation of some 190 student clubs and societies along with some 75 sports clubs. There is a student run newspaper as well as a professional sound and lighting company for events in the area. It holds a regular RAG organisation, the largest outside the US, which raises over £1 million each year for good causes. There is a Student Volunteer Centre and an international volunteering project as well as working in the larger community.

The main campus is to the west of the centre of Nottingham on a site called University Park Campus, some 300 acres in size. It has a clock tower and large lake at is heart as well as green areas all contributing to its reputation as one of the most attractive campuses in England. There are a number of listed buildings on or around the campus adding to the reputation. The Jubilee Campus is a mile from the main campus and is home to the Schools of Education and Computer Science and the Business School. Other campuses include the City Hospital Campus, the Sutton Bonington Campus and the King’s Meadow Campus. International growth has led to a campus in Semenyih, Malaysia and in Ningbo, China. There are a number of different accommodation options spread over the campuses of the university. Some of these are based in historic and impressive buildings around the main campus as well as in the secondary campuses. There are catered halls for undergraduates as well as self-catering sites for both undergraduates and postgraduates while there is help on hand for those wishing to use private sector housing off-campus around the city including advice about popular areas and the expected costs involved.
